Heavenly Churros with Chocolate Dipping Sauce: DIY Delight

Among the many Spanish desserts, Churros (Spanish doughnuts), with its golden crispy exterior and soft interior, paired with rich chocolate sauce, has become an irresistible delicacy in the hearts of many sweet tooths. Making your own heavenly Churros at home is not that complicated. Follow the steps below and you too can enjoy this DIY treat.

Origin of Churros

Churros originated in Spain and is said to have been invented by shepherds who, when grazing in the mountains where fresh bread was not readily available, squeezed the dough into strips and baked them over a fire. The name comes from the horns of the “Churra” sheep, as they are similar in shape to the horns of that sheep.

Preparation of the ingredients

  • Flour: 200g
  • Water: 240 ml
  • Salt: a pinch
  • Sugar: 2 tbsp
  • Olive oil: 2 tbsp
  • Unsalted butter: 50g
  • Eggs: 2
  • Vegetable oil: a good amount (for frying)
  • Dark chocolate: 100g
  • Heavy cream: 100 ml

Steps for making ### Churros

  1. In a medium-sized saucepan, combine the water, caster sugar, olive oil and salt and bring to the boil over a medium heat.
  2. Add the sifted flour and stir quickly to combine until the dough forms a ball and leaves the walls of the pan.
  3. Transfer the dough to a large bowl, let cool slightly, then add the egg and mix well until the dough is smooth.
  4. Put the dough into a piping bag with a star-shaped piping nozzle of your choice.
  5. Add enough vegetable oil to a pan and heat to about 170°C.
  6. Squeeze out strips of dough about 10 cm long, cut with scissors and carefully place in the hot oil for deep-frying.
  7. Fry until golden brown, then remove, place on kitchen paper to drain and roll in caster sugar while still hot.

Steps for making chocolate sauce

  1. Finely chop the dark chocolate and place in a clean bowl.
  2. Heat the heavy cream in a small saucepan until it comes to a light boil, not a full boil.
  3. Pour the hot heavy cream over the chocolate chips and leave to stand for a minute, stirring well until a smooth chocolate sauce is formed.
